International Artist – Wang Jie

Wang Jie, a native of Qidu, Keelung, graduated from the Doctoral Program in Fine Arts and Painting at the University of Barcelona in Spain. Upon returning to Taiwan, he founded Miaokou Art Studio in Keelung and works as a part-time illustrator for various columns. He is the author of Hand-Drawn Spanish Moments, A Painter’s Guide to Keelung: Mini Travels, and Drawing Lessons on the Road.

During his university years and while studying in Spain, Wang Jie primarily focused on abstract art. Interestingly, none of his three published works reflect his earlier abstract style. It was only after returning to Taiwan that he transitioned into the realm of watercolor sketching.

Wang Jie’s landscape paintings are a blend of realism and bold, expressive brushstrokes. His use of fresh, vibrant colors initially appears to lean towards a Western style but carries the philosophical depth of traditional Chinese landscape painting. His works seamlessly weave words and images together, creating a harmonious narrative.

His creative process begins with a black gel pen to outline the center of the composition, gradually expanding outward. Using varied line weights, he shapes the structure of the subject before applying watercolor. Unlike conventional watercolor techniques that emphasize broad washes followed by details, Wang Jie does the opposite. He starts with intricate coloring, intentionally leaving blank spaces to create a translucent and airy effect, enhancing the freshness of the colors.

Inspired by the joy of hand-drawn travel journals in Spain, Wang Jie returned to Keelung and began exploring his hometown with the curious eyes of a tourist. He captured hidden gems that once went unnoticed, eventually compiling them into A Painter’s Guide to Keelung: Mini Travels. This work was named "Keelung’s Book of the Year" in 2010.
