Sung Kai Ting – The Internationally Leaping Watercolor

Class starts on April 30 at 21:00.

Sometimes, losing control is just the beginning of beauty.

Sung Kai Ting, an artist who experiences the beauty of the city through watercolor. Fascinated by painting since middle school, they focus on capturing fleeting yet beautiful urban moments with watercolor. Whether it's a street corner at sunset or reflections after the rain, these scenes become his language of dialogue with watercolor. His works not only showcase the intricate details of the city but also embody an elegant gray tone reminiscent of a British gentleman, blended with the milky white of afternoon coffee, creating an extraordinary artistic experience.

Teacher Sung Kai-Ting graduated from the Department of Arts and Design at National Dong Hwa University and has been selected multiple times for international watercolor exhibitions, including the American Watercolor Society (AWS) and the National Watercolor Society (NWS). His work 「The Sound of Falling Snow」 stood out in the French watercolor magazine competition, winning first place. In addition, he is a formal member of the China Asia-Pacific Watercolor Association, the American AWS, NWS, and the Taiwan International Watercolor Society.

Teacher Sung will be exhibiting his 「New York Night」 work at the Salmagundi Club in New York City, marking his sixth time being selected for the AWS Annual Exhibition. Through teaching and creation, he continues to inspire future watercolor artists, proving that even in chaos, the beginning of beauty can be found.

A unique watercolor style.

Distinctive Watercolor Style - These glimmers in the city's crevices are the language of my conversation with watercolors.

Inspired by British-style watercolor : Teacher Sung Kai-Ting's color mixing style is deeply influenced by classical British watercolor. His works showcase a calm and enduring gray tone. This style is starkly different from traditional vibrant, transparent watercolors, incorporating subtle amounts of opaque white, creating a visual effect with depth and layers.

Innovation and experimentation in technique : He not only follows traditional watercolor techniques but also actively explores and experiments with special methods, including scraping and spraying. This open and experimental attitude allows students to learn how to freely express themselves in watercolor painting, bringing unexpected creative surprises.

A unique perspective on urban landscapes : His cityscape paintings are not just representations of reality; they reinterpret the light, shadows, and colors of the city through the artist's eyes, capturing beauty that is easily overlooked.

Learning from practical experience : Teacher Sung Kai-Ting emphasizes practical application in his teaching. Students will directly learn how to observe, select materials, and express themselves through his works. This teaching approach rapidly enhances students' practical painting skills and artistic perception.

Exploring the Roots of Watercolor

Explore the origins of watercolor

Thomas Girtin,1775-1802

The British watercolorist, Girtin, became famous for his architectural design drawings, topographical maps, and paintings. His use of watercolor in landscape painting made him one of the founders of modern watercolor painting. His etchings also showcased his artistic talent and personality. Unfortunately, he died young from tuberculosis, and Turner remarked, "If Girtin had lived, I certainly wouldn't have the career I have now." From 1794 until his death, his works were exhibited at the Royal Academy of Arts, and some of his excellent pieces were donated by private collectors to the British Museum and the Victoria and Albert Museum.

Joseph Mallord William Turner,1775—1851

A Romantic landscape British painter, watercolorist, and etcher. In the 18th century, when historical painting was the dominant genre, his works were not highly regarded, but in modern times, he is recognized as one of the greatest landscape painters. Turner loved to depict natural phenomena and natural disasters: fires, shipwrecks, sunlight, storms, heavy rain, and fog. He was in awe of the power of the sea, and although he also painted figures, they were merely to highlight the grandeur and wildness of nature, which could not be conquered by humans—proof of God's power. In his later years, he focused on capturing the light on water surfaces, the sky, and flames, gradually abandoning the depiction of objects and details, thus paving the way for the theories of Impressionism.

Pastoral Landscape

Tranquil Scenery

Using a gray-green palette to create a natural and harmonious atmosphere, the light and shadow changes are made more vivid, injecting a strong emotional expression into the landscape. Song Kaiting skillfully combines the artistic languages of these two masters, capturing the flow of light, shadow, and air with watercolor's unique transparency and color variation, filling the scene with a tranquil yet layered beauty.

By applying wet-on-wet technique, the airy feel of a Gilding-style painting is gently achieved, while the small cottage and fields in the foreground are delicately outlined with dry brushwork, giving the composition a stable structure. In the treatment of the sky and light, soft sunlight shines over the fields, transitioning the color tones from calm gray-green to warm golden yellow, showcasing the ever-changing beauty of nature.

The Structure and Fluidity

Inheriting Gilding’s Rigorous Structure

Emphasizing Turner’s Flowing Watercolor Technique

Professor Sung Kai Ting inherits Gilding's architectural structural techniques and uses Turner's watercolor fluidity to interpret the colors and halos of the city. His unique watercolor method blends the poetic English landscape painting with Eastern expressive aesthetics. Through delicate yet fluid brushstrokes, he captures the tranquility and vitality of the countryside. This is not only a tribute to the styles of Gilding and Turner, but also a profound dialogue about watercolor art. In the interplay of light, shadow, and color, one can feel the serenity and poetry of nature.
