LEO|奧地利皇家巡禮 - 童話水彩插畫

Leo - The Fairy Tale Artist of Royal Descent

I focus on transforming imagination into reality—creating tangible works from fantasy, and presenting them to the world through visual language.

Illustrator | Visual Artist | Royal Bloodline of Liechtenstein

Leo was born into Austrian nobility as the daughter of Prince Gundakar von und zu Liechtenstein. Though her lineage holds a long-standing place among Europe’s royal families, she chose to carve out her own path through the arts. Her work often begins with delicate, hand-painted watercolor illustrations, which she then transforms into rich visual patterns and applied designs—ranging from wedding invitations and holiday cards to large-scale murals and brand identities, including for the Canadian makeup brand SAPPHO New Paradigm. You may have encountered her joyful characters, like the little dogs Scottie and Danny, in children’s books, or seen her free-form color blocks and decorative motifs on cosmetics packaging and handmade cards. These are all expressions of her ability to give form to the fantastical worlds she envisions.

Leo’s creative process starts with traditional watercolor on paper, followed by scanning, digital refinement, and rearrangement into pattern elements suited for diverse mediums. She believes that each project is a dialogue—a shared journey with her clients. Inspired by travel, cultural experiences, and conversation, Leo strives to create art that doesn’t just show an image but invites the viewer to feel the story within. In this course, she welcomes you into her fairy-tale world—teaching you how to draw inspiration from both imagination and everyday life, and how to use watercolor as a storytelling tool to weave your own illustrated narrative.

Leo’s Enchanted Journey into Fairy Tale Illustration

♛ "A creator who brings fairy tales to life through rich storytelling and imaginative charm"

This course begins with a personal invitation from Leo to step into two cities close to her heart — Lisbon and Vienna — and experience the soul and beauty they hold. As a descendant of the Liechtenstein royal family, Leo carries her family’s legacy and honor, yet she chose to walk her own artistic path. She completed her university studies in Paris and later moved to Berlin, where she worked as a graphic designer for five years. However, a deep-rooted connection to Portugal — tied to both childhood memories and ancestral ties — eventually brought her back to Lisbon. There, she found her creative home, a place of emotional belonging and artistic inspiration, and continues to cultivate her unique journey in illustration.

♛ "Her artwork is a celebration of creativity and childlike wonder"

“I’ve always been captivated by fairy tale books. I could spend hours just admiring the illustrations, soaking in the warmth or thrill of each scene, imagining how I would depict those characters and settings in my own style.”

With paper and brush in hand, Leo records her own stories — transforming the spark of her childhood passion into a wellspring of creativity. Through her whimsical characters and dreamlike worlds, she weaves magical narratives that unfold gently with each stroke. Her art, born from deep emotion and imagination, quietly touches the hearts of both children and adults alike, offering a gentle yet profound presence throughout their lives.

Artistic Nourishment from

Vienna and the House of Liechtenstein

The Liechtenstein family has long valued art and curation. Growing up in an environment where classical and contemporary works coexist deeply shaped Leo’s aesthetic sensibility. In Vienna, architecture and the arts are not only beautiful but also rich in historical and spiritual significance. This craftsmanship and cultural heritage taught her to appreciate the timeless nature of art—how it transcends time to convey stories and memories.

An International Journey — Bringing Vienna to Canvas and Perspective

Royal Heritage Meets Global Perspective — A Journey of Technique and Expression

Raised in such an environment, Leo was surrounded by a harmonious blend of classical and modern art. The Birth of a Character: The Complete Character Design Journey

Imagination & Ideation / Setting & Concept / Perspective & Construction / Emotion & Gesture

This course offers a professional-level training experience in character design. Starting from observing everyday life—animals, plants, and natural forms—you’ll learn how to extract inspiration from your surroundings. Through form studies and stylistic experimentation, you’ll shape the foundations of character silhouettes and gradually develop original designs with unique visual identity and compelling backstories. The course walks you through every phase: from silhouette ideation, visual testing, perspective drawing, gesture and body language studies, emotional expression, to fine detailing and final rendering. With segmented, systemized practice, you’ll strengthen your logic and execution in character design. Instructor LEO, known for his fairy tale illustrations, will guide you with his years of storytelling and visual development experience—helping you build not just imaginative characters, but entire narrative worlds.

A Character Only Comes Alive When the Story Begins to Flow

What makes a character compelling isn’t how well you draw, but how deeply you understand and interpret them—through emotion, narrative, and perspective.

Characters aren’t just drawn—they emerge from the heart of a story. A truly touching character doesn’t just “look” like a protagonist—they carry emotional weight, undergo transformation, and can tell an entire story through a single gaze or gesture.

The essence of character design isn’t perfection—it’s understanding: What are they afraid of? What do they long for? How are they changed by the story they live in? To design characters is to tell stories through images.

You’re not just drawing a figure—you’re drawing a personality, a journey, and an inner light. In this course, we’ll explore how emotion, body language, and narrative purpose bring your characters to life. You don’t need flashy techniques—just a bit of observation, a bit of imagination, and the patience to truly listen to your characters. Because the most powerful characters are never the most perfect ones— They’re the most real.

Practicing Creativity|Draw Your Own Fairy Tale, Beyond Words

Creative Storytelling Beyond the Limits of Text.

Starting with foundational sketching, you’ll gradually infuse your work with imagination and originality. You’ll learn to turn fleeting ideas into tangible images that express emotion and narrative—because stories don’t need words to be felt.

Through character design, you’ll explore personality, posture, and appearance—discovering the narrative potential behind every expression and gesture. Each character becomes a doorway into a world. You’ll learn to build scenes and storylines around them and eventually develop a cohesive, personal visual language that supports a full series of themed illustrations.

Motion & Emotion|The Visual Engine of a Story

Through gestures and expressions, let your character narrate a story without words.

A character’s pose and expression aren’t just visual details—they are the emotional gateway to the story. In this course, you’ll practice portraying a wide range of emotions and body language, giving your characters depth and life across various story contexts.

Through observation, reference, and creative exercises, you’ll learn to make characters “move” even in still images—using subtle gestures and expressive faces to convey feelings and advance the narrative. Whether your character is laughing, crying, or showing quiet strength, you’ll capture moments that resonate. By the end, you won’t just be drawing characters—you’ll be giving them the power to tell stories.

Fairy Tale Creation | The Visual Engine of Storytelling

Dreamlike visuals breathe life into the heartbeat of the story.

In character design, action and emotion are not just embellishments—they are the bridge that draws the audience into your story. This course dives deep into the performance of characters through movement and feeling, teaching you to build versatile personas for different story contexts and breathe narrative life into them. With practices in observation, replication, and hands-on creation, you’ll explore how to make characters feel dynamic on the page—communicating emotion and momentum through gestures and expressions. From joy and sorrow to surprise and determination, your characters will come alive in every frame. Ultimately, this course helps you go beyond illustration—empowering your characters to become storytellers and leading you into your own whimsical world of visual storytelling.

Nature Puzzle | Practicing Leaf, Branch, and Story Composition

Build quiet narratives from the details of leaves, stems, and silence.

The veins of leaves, the shapes of fruits, the twists of branches, and the bloom of flowers are not merely decorative elements, nor just depictions of nature. Under Leo’s guidance, you’ll start by closely observing the form and details of plants, and gradually learn how to transform them into visual language—turning nature into a vital storytelling element within your illustrations.

Architectural Structure | From Real-World Observation to Fantasy Worldbuilding

Learn to shape imagined worlds through real architectural rhythm.

Delicate spires, intricate window frames, and balanced proportions are the foundations of imagined worlds. In this course, Leo teaches you how to analyze real-world architecture to understand spatial logic and structural curves. You'll learn how to capture light, shadow, and texture—not just to portray realism, but to build the skeleton of fantasy environments where your characters can truly live.

THE CHARACTER

Form & Style Evolution | From Realistic Rendering to Stylized Expression

A training journey from foundational drawing skills to the development of a personal, stylized creative expression.

Students begin by drawing in a realistic style, honing their ability to observe structure, detail, and contour. With a strong foundation, you’ll explore how to stylize real-world forms—such as transforming animals into characters—developing a personal and expressive artistic style. This journey isn’t just about improving technique; it’s a gateway to limitless creativity.

THE SHADE

Layered Light & Shadow | Conveying Mood and Emotion through Color

Through layered compositions of light and shadow, emotional tension is gradually brewed on the canvas.

Through masterful layering of lights and darks, Leo brings fairy tales to life with vivid atmosphere and presence. Light and shadow don’t just enhance mood—they create depth and volume. This course guides you to understand the logic of light sources, how to balance key light, fill light, and reflected light, and how to layer colors to create visual richness. As you learn to control lighting and color, your illustrations will begin to tell stories with emotional depth and dreamlike beauty—unlocking your own fairy tale world.

Rediscover your creative roots, and let childlike wonder and boundless imagination bloom on paper.

A Message From Master

Each of us carries stories within us. And when we choose to share those stories—through images, emotions, or any form of expression—we open the door to connection and understanding. These stories don’t need to be told with elaborate techniques. Sometimes, a single glance or a certain shade of color is enough to move someone deeply. I hope my work allows people to feel seen, to be touched, and maybe even to find a part of their own story within it. Even if it’s just a single moment—if it brings comfort, resonance, or a quiet strength, then it matters. Stories help us know each other. They help us express what lives inside and begin to understand ourselves more fully. That’s what I hope to offer— a soft but honest kind of connection. A bridge made of images, where each piece becomes a quiet conversation— and in that moment of looking, someone finds a reflection of their own inner voice.

- Leopoldine Liechtenstein

Sharing the fairy-tale colors of life with you

Through conversation, I listen closely and attentively, uncovering the true essence—then translate it into a visual language that tells a heartfelt story in a way that is uniquely their own.

I hope you experience a sense of inner peace—something simple, like the tranquility that arises from gazing at a flower or a landscape. I believe that this sense of peace comes from recognizing a narrative within the image that feels familiar or resonates deeply. We all have stories to share, and when we express them—whether visually, emotionally, or in other ways—we cultivate connection and understanding. My aspiration is that my work enables people to feel seen, to experience emotions, or perhaps even to discover a part of their own story within it. Stories shape, express, and enhance our understanding of one another. This is the feeling I aim to evoke.

About Class

  • A Storyteller of Light and Detail — Leopoldine Liechtenstein (Leo)

An illustrator based in Lisbon, Portugal, Leo graduated from a design academy in Paris. Born in Austria and raised in the royal family of Liechtenstein, she grew up surrounded by art and has been documenting the world through images since childhood. Her illustration style is gentle and refined, often featuring flora, fauna, natural light, and warm colors to tell quiet, poetic stories. Her work appears in wedding invitations, children’s books, and stationery design—always with a strong sense of narrative and emotional depth.

Leo’s creative journey began in early childhood; at the age of six, she handcrafted her first picture book—a story about a hedgehog searching for a friend. This passion for visual storytelling has stayed with her ever since. She believes that illustration is not merely decorative, but a visual language for translating feelings and experiences. Whether she’s designing a personalized wedding card or creating whimsical characters for children, her works are rooted in quiet observation and heartfelt connection.

After living in cities like Paris and Berlin, Leo chose to settle in Lisbon, a city rich in color and light, where creation remains the center of her life. Her inspiration comes from the rhythms of nature and the simplicity of daily life. Outside of illustration, she finds joy in surfing, long walks, and coffee culture—everyday rituals that fuel her creative energy.

Leo’s work blends elements of European classical aesthetics with deeply personal experience. It carries warmth in its storytelling and elegance in its quiet details. She believes that the power of illustration lies in emotional resonance and the stories we pass on—that if we take a moment to truly look, we may find a journey of love and memory hidden in every image.
